Fifth-graders from the Episcopal School of Dallas and St. Philip’s School and Community Center participated in 2theXtreme: MathAlive! exhibit’s Xtreme Math Match at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Each student was paired with a local meteorologist, including Evan Andrews of Fox 4, Colleen Coyle of WFAA, David Finfrock of NBC 5, Jeff Jamison of CBS 11, Milmar Ramirez of Univision and Kevin Roth of CW 33. Mary Grace Altizer, Connor Awbrey, Evin Bishop, Paco Gomez- Quinonez, Jackson Lutz and Dalia Nabulsi represented ESD.

They answered math equations such as, “A weather balloon is ten feet off the ground and is rising at a constant rate of two feet per second.  What is its height after three minutes?” — all in front of an audience of peers cheering them on.

The event was part of the Perot Museum’s newest exhibit, which is focused on STEM research and learning. The 5,000-square-foot space features 40 interactive experiences, including video games, sports, fashion, music and robotics, all aimed at instilling in children a passion for math. The traveling exhibit runs through Jan. 4.

Recently ESD and St. Philip’s students asked Mayor Mike Rawlings to declare November “Math Rocks Month,” encouraging other kids to write their own letters to the mayor.

Carnival 2014 - 077

Lamplighter student Lauren Harrington shares a silly moment with the carnival’s stilt walker.

The Lamplighter School held its annual carnival on Sept. 26, with the circus theme, “Under the Big Top,” celebrating, “The Greatest School on Earth.” The event also marked the culmination of the school’s shoe drive for Souls4Souls, having donated more than 9,000 pairs of shoes over the past three years.

The carnival is now in its 45th year. Hundreds of kids and community members turned out for the occasion.
