Dallas ISD’s District 1 trustee Elizabeth Jones announced last week she is not running again in the May school board election. In a statement to the Dallas Morning News, she says she has decided to focus on her health.

She told the News: “My recent experience with breast cancer has convinced me that my focus on treatment and a full recovery is paramount for me and my family. With the election cycle now approaching along with the demands and requirements it takes to run for office, I concluded it would be in my best interest not to run again.”

Two familiar candidates have entered the race to claim her seat: former District 1 trustee Edwin Flores and Kyle Renard, a pediatrician who serves on the Dallas County School Board and ran against Flores in 2009.

District 1 includes in the W.T. White and Thomas Jefferson feeder patterns and part of the Hillcrest feeder pattern. The election is May 9.
