The mezze platter at Oso Food and Wine: Photo by Rasy Ran

Restauranteur Michael Cox opened our neighborhood’s new Mediterranean spot, Oso Food and Wine, last fall to rave reviews. So, it comes as a surprise that the Preston-Forest restaurant closed suddenly over the weekend.

We featured the promising new restaurant in our magazine last year. With chef Kelly Hightower (of Hattie’s and Tei Tei) at the helm, Oso received praise from local critics for it’s incorporation of Middle Eastern, Spanish and Italian flavors — although Leslie Brenner noted it had a “fuzzy identity”.

Cox told CultureMap that despite the high ratings, Oso just never gained a strong enough audience.
