Summer is a great time to sink your teeth into a new book. Novels and hammocks go together like bacon and eggs. Reading is a solitary act, but it can also foster conversation. Luckily, there are plenty of book clubs around town that give bibliophiles a forum for sharing their ideas. Here are five.

1. The Preston Royal Book Club – Once a month, the Preston Royal Library hosts a book club in its auditorium. You have until June 24 to read “Bel Canto” by Ann Patchett.

2. The Morning Book Club – Meetings take place the first Monday of every month at the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center. On July 6, the group will discuss Roberta Rich’s historical novel, “The Harem Midwife.”

3. The Mayor’s Summer Reading Club – The Mayor’s Summer Reading Club isn’t just for kids. Adults are also encouraged to participate. Read a book, write a review and post it online. You could win some impressive prizes including symphony tickets, a Sevy’s gift card and a one night stay at the Fairmont.

4. Preston Hollow Book Club – Kerri Cleghorn Lai founded Preston Hollow Book Club after moving to our neighborhood from Frisco, where she started a similar group. The inaugural meeting will take place at her home this Wednesday. She’ll have members write book recommendations on pieces of paper and conduct a random drawing. The person whose book is chosen first will organize the next gathering.

5. Preston Hollow Women’s Club – In addition to philanthropic events, Preston Hollow Women’s Club hosts tennis outings, wine tastings, and book clubs. To inquire about membership, contact Lola Sims at jeslcs@aol.com.
