June 21 was the first official day of summer, but everyone knows the season doesn’t really begin until you find a pool. Not the best swimmer? Here are four places in our neighborhood that will have you (or your child) feeling like Michael Phelps by August.

1. Town North Family YMCA – Children as young as six months learn to swim at the Y. Adults looking to perfect their breaststrokes or relieve arthritis pain can also sign up for classes. Bonus: many water activities are free to members.

2. CooperAerobics – Marni Kerner coaches The Hockaday School swim team. She is also the CooperAerobics swim pro. Whether you are training for a triathlon or just trying to get healthy, sign up for a class with Kerner. A thirty minute private lesson is $60.

3. Dolfin Swim School – Dolfin Swim School has been in business for over 40 years. The school even has its own swim team, but no one is expected to join right away. The free Baby Kick & Splash class promotes parent-child bonding and helps acclimate infants to the water.

4. Emler Swim School – Believe it or not, Emler Swim School is located in a strip mall. Don’t let the facade fool you. Inside you’ll find two pools, one of which is 40 feet long. In addition to swim lessons, Emler hosts birthday parties. Kids are supervised by two certified lifeguards, so parents can relax and socialize until it’s time to cut the cake.
