Sure, you’ve seen a ladybug or two on Northaven Trail, but what about a bookworm? Your odds of spotting the species will significantly increase August 8. That’s when Sophie Pearson, a rising ninth-grader at Hockaday, plans to erect a Little Free Library near the intersection of Northaven Trail and Edgemere.

“The Little Free Library works on a ‘take a book, leave a book’ system,” she explains. “Anybody can either borrow a book, or they can keep it, if they want to replace it with another book they have at home.”

Pearson became interested in Little Free Libraries the second she learned about the potted, mailbox-like structures.

“I knew that I wanted to install one somewhere at some point,” she says. “When it came time to choose a Silver Award project, I realized that this project had the components necessary to get the award.”

The “Silver Award” is given to Girl Scouts who demonstrate a commitment to bettering the community. Pearson hopes her Little Free Library will bring an additional touch of excitement to our neighborhood.

“The trail has had a lot of changes in the past year,” she says. “The Little Free Library would be a fun thing for people to do when they’re in the area.”
