In June, we vowed to shed light on some of our neighborhood’s more mysterious businesses. Today we continue to make good on that promise. This is the second post in our new “What is it?” series. Let’s investigate that curiously unmarked building at 4609 W. Lovers Lane, shall we?

Don’t worry about the lack of signage. You’ll have no trouble finding Canary, a high-end clothing boutique on Lovers Lane. The bright yellow paint lining the entrance is impossible to miss.

Merry Vose, the woman behind Cabana, another neighborhood fashion spot, owns the store. She’s stocked it with designer dresses, shoes and jewelry. Labels include The Row, Stevie Howell, Kenzo and Crippen. If you want to see the goods, you pretty much have to make the trip. Canary’s website has practical details like directions and store hours, but no photos. You can’t follow the store on Facebook or Twitter. However, Canary does keep a rather arty Instagram account for those who like being teased.

The minimal marketing seems intentional. On the off chance that it’s not, it’s accidentally brilliant. Walking into Canary feels a lot like stepping into a private closet. It’s exclusive, it’s intriguing, it’s worth checking out.
