Our neighbor, Laura Bush, is taking a stand for butterflies. Her nonprofit, Texan by Nature, has partnered with three other organizations to launch a statewide monarch butterfly conservation plan.

More information about the partnership becomes available tomorrow, when the former first lady and representatives from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Wildlife Federation host a press conference at the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Here’s what we know so far.

The project is a response to “the trilateral commitment by President Obama, Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada and Enrique Pena Nieto, President of Mexico, to conserve Monarch butterflies across the three countries.”

In the last ten years, the migrating Monarch population has decreased by 80%. Since Texas is an essential part of the migration route, significant efforts have already been made to establish nectar-producing stations throughout the state.

Going forward, Laura Bush, via Texan by Nature, will provide “employers with meaningful ways to get involved by creating habitat essential to the Monarch butterfly.” Better stretch your green thumb.
