When Juliana Lu and Stella Sigurdsson — 6th graders at The Hockaday School — heard Donald T. Shields Elementary had been severely damaged by tornadoes, they wanted to help. Since their birthdays were on the horizon, the girls decided to host a joint party. (They’ve been best friends since pre-k and do stuff like that.)

In lieu of presents, they asked partygoers to bring books to donate to the school’s library. Lu and Sigurdsson accumulated more than 600 titles. Most were supplied by their friends, but 100 came from Hockaday’s own collection. How’s that for selfless?
