While his choice in hairpieces might be questionable, one can’t question to prolific nature of the bank robber that seems to have set up camp in our neighborhood. Coined by the FBI as the “Bad Hair Bandit,”

the man is suspected of hitting five banks in three months, including three in one day last week.

The crimes occurred:

  • Jan. 27 at the BBVA Compass Bank, 11705 Preston Road
  • 8 at the BB&T Bank, 11800 Preston Road
  • March 15 at the Comerica Bank, 19176 Preston Road
  • March 15 at the Bank of Texas, 6701 Preston Road
  • March 15 at the BBVA Compass Bank, 6501 Hillcrest

All of the incidents followed a similar pattern. A black man in his late 40s or early 50s wearing a cheap-looking black or grey wig approaches the banks teller with a note saying that he is armed and demanding cash. He usually wears jeans and a sweater. He is thought to have fled at least one scene in a white, four-door sedan that may be a 2013-15 Nissan Altima.

Not all of his crimes have been successful, the FBI says some were attempted robberies. When asked which, Texas FBI spokeswoman Allison Mahan says, “I don’t think we’re releasing that level of detail.”

The FBI is also not releasing how much money the “Bad Hair Bandit” has made off with so far, but the Texas Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. All tips are taken anonymously at 877.373.TIPS (8477).
