It’s been no small feat, but St. Rita Catholic Church is ready to unveil a unique musical project this weekend. California-based composer Frank La Rocca was specially commissioned to create “A Rose in Winter: The life of Saint Rita of Cascia.” The oratorio for chorus, orchestra and soloists will premiere on Saturday, May 21, at 8 p.m. at the church. The showcase is part of the three-day conference of art and Catholicism entitled High Above the Stars: Sainthood, Beauty and Catholic Artistic Expression.” There is no charge to attend “A Rose in Winter,” but registration for the conference is $30-$75. 

Get your creative juices flowing because the inaugural “Chalk the Park” event hits the Shops at Park Lane this Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Professional artists will create temporary works of art on the sidewalks of the park in the middle of the shopping center. Attendees will also be invited to leave their colorful mark in the cement. A live DJ and face-painting round out the event. There is no cost to attend.

Still feeling artistic? Northaven Gardens will launch a new exhibit of artwork with an opening reception on Friday, May 20, from 5-7 p.m. “Nature, Impressed” features pieces inspired by the great outdoors by artists Cynthia Daniel, Kristin Markham, Lottie Minnick, Sarah Willis, Terri Thoman and Ann McCann. There is no charge to attend.

Take an opportunity to reflect on lost loved ones during the Service of Remembrance hosted by VNA Hospice Care at Preston Hollow United Methodist Church Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to light an candle and share memories of the person they lost. A reception will follow the service and there is no charge to attend.
