Mavericks owner Mark Cuban gave a big gift to the city today by contributing $1 million “in support of the Dallas Police Department’s response to the Orlando nightclub shooting,” Mayor Rawlings announced in a press release.

The money will go toward about 16,000 overtime hours so officers can increase their efforts, to be used at the discretion of Police Chief David Brown. They are expected to go toward counterterrorism efforts as well as boosting the police presence in Oak Lawn.

“These funds will be used primarily to protect the LGBT community,” Brown says in the release. “We will earmark and track the expenditure of these funds to ensure its effective use in creating a safe environment.”

Following the country’s deadliest mass shooting, in which 49 victims were gunned down at a gay nightclub in Orlando, police departments all over the country are beefing up security for the LGBTQ community in the midst of Gay Pride Month.

Rawling made the announcement during the Dallas Pride Month Spirit of Equality Awards Ceremony at City Hall.

“I’m proud to be able to help the City of Dallas,” said Cuban, a Preston Hollow resident, in the press release.
