The newly elected Dustin Marshall —District 2 representative on the DISD school board — is hosting a series of discussions throughout the district in the coming weeks. Marshall says the events are a “casual and informal opportunity to meet with me and discuss your priorities and concerns.”
The first meet-up will be held tomorrow night at Bar Louie at 8166 Park Lane. The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. On Aug. 18 he will hold a meeting at Times Ten Cellar at 6324 Prospect from 5-7 p.m., and on July 29 and Sept. 2, Marshall will meet at the Buzzbrew at 5815 Live Oak from 9-11 a.m.
Marshall says there is no need to RSVP for the meetings, but attendees will be asked to sign in.
District 2 is less than a month removed from a hard-fought runoff election between Marshall and Mita Havlick. A mere 42 votes separated the two candidates.
Mike Morath vacated the District 2 seat last December to become the Texas Education Agency commissioner, leaving one year of his three-year term to be filled. Four candidates sought to replace him in May’s special election, with Marshall and Havlick each garnering enough votes to face each other in Saturday’s runoff.
More than $285,000 was raised during the six-month-long race — a fundraising record for a DISD race — with Marshall spending nearly 5 times as much as Havlick, according to the campaign finance reports.
Marshall ran on a platform of continuing the momentum of education reform championed by Morath. “We’ve made some reforms at DISD in this area, and I want to make sure those continue and are implemented with fidelity.”
