Welcome back, District 1! The 2016-17 school year is underway, and I’m excited about the possibilities and opportunities it brings for our students, staff members and schools. It’s also a time to build on the accomplishments of last school year in order to create lasting and ever-increasing student achievement.

A key to creating an environment of college and career readiness begins with strong campus leaders. Despite some changes, I am confident we continue to have some of the finest principals in the Dallas Independent School District. I’m proud to welcome the following leaders to District 1:

  • Adrian Luna — Nathan Adams Elementary School
  • Carol Crowling — George H.W. Bush Elementary School
  • Kim L. Ashmore — Tom C. Gooch Elementary School
  • Wendy Miller — Harry C. Withers Elementary School

District 1 is home to some of the most outstanding schools in Dallas. We need the continued support of our parents and families. One way we can all help is by encouraging students to read at least 30 minutes daily. Just 30 minutes of reading daily improves reading abilities while expanding the minds of students through new and creative experiences. And if nothing else, reading is fun!

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of students. A great example was found on the district’s 2016 STAAR results in mathematics. 14034962_1424735327543387_9032525522612572696_n[1]Students in third-, fourth-, fifth- and eighth-grade all improved on their performance from 2015. In fact, even with more rigorous standards this year, fifth and eighth-graders outpaced state standards, improving by 13 points and 8 percent, respectively.

Results like these are only one reason that I am hopeful you share my enthusiasm regarding the present and future of Dallas ISD. Academically and business-wise, we are making progress toward meeting our goal of being the nation’s premier urban school district.

I am honored to serve District 1 and invite each of you to join me as we move students to greater heights. Let’s make this a journey we all share and commit to living a life bigger than ourselves by making a difference in students’ lives.

Let’s have a great school year.
