Rough boundaries of the 3.9-acre site The Cambridge School hopes to occupy on Royal Lane, the current home of Walnut Hill Lutheran Church.

One of the neighborhood’s small Christian private schools is looking to relocate to a roomier piece of land, although officials are not yet ready to discuss the expansion plans publicly. The Cambridge School, currently located on Walnut Hill Lane, is seeking city approval to move to 3202 Royal Lane.

In July, the 3.9-acre property was listed for sale by the Walnut Hill Lutheran Church for $2.7 million, which includes all of the buildings. The land is currently a piece of Planning Development District 623, which carries residential zoning, although it has long been developed as a church. The Cambridge School has asked the city to amend that zoning designation to allow for the private school to operate at the site.

Although there is a request in to zoning, we would prefer to wait until the process concludes before we do any interviews,” says Emily Eber, director of communications and community development, when asked for comment. “We are still in early stages and don’t want to rush anything.”

Calls to Walnut Hill Lutheran Church were not immediately returned, so its relocation plans are not yet known, but this article will be updated when we learn more.

The small parochial school has around 120 students in grades six through 12, and currently shares its Walnut Hill Lane campus with another religious group, The Village Church.

The neighborhood at the corner of Royal Lane and Webb Chapel Road is already well developed with homes and retail, and the land the school is eyeing sits catty-corner to the Webb Royal Plaza shopping center. Part of the rezoning would include a traffic management plan on the already-bustling intersection.
