There was once a time when neighbors hung out on the front porches, greeting each other as they passed to share the day’s gossip. We only know because we’ve heard about it from those who grew up in Preston Hollow in a time before screens became an omnipresent piece of our daily lives.

While some may bemoan the loss of “the good old days,” an optimist would say we haven’t lost them, they’ve just transformed. Now, instead of meeting over the mailbox, we hang out online — still sharing the news of the neighborhood, but this time on Facebook, Nextdoor and Twitter. In a 2011 story, we explored the digitalization of our neighborhood, from parenting to city services. Give it a read, a lot of the information remains relevant, and the city’s trail etiquette video featuring Preston Hollow celebs like Mark Cuban and the late great Ebby Halliday is good for a giggle.

In many ways our new ways of communication has made our lives more convenient and connected — just hop on social media and you can find out everything you’d want to know about what happened that day. The Advocate is here to keep in the loop, with stories exclusive to Preston Hollow, so give us a follow on Facebook and Twitter.
