If you’ve ever taken out the trash and wondered where it went after the garbage collector grabbed it, you’re certainly not the only one.
In 2009, the Advocate followed our neighborhood’s trash from the end of the driveway to its permanent home at Dallas’ 996-acre McCommas Bluff Landfill. The landfill, located near the intersection of I-20 and I-45, is the recipient of 5,000 tons of garbage every day.
That may seem overwhelming, but McCommas Bluff’s bioreactor technology transforms garbage into methane gas sold into natural gas companies. This not only gives the city additional revenue but also creates space in the landfill.
