World War II veteran Fred Wiedemann

From “Band of Brothers” to “The Great Escape,” World War II veterans’ stories, both real and imagined, have been celebrated in books and film for decades.

While some of their experiences have been cemented into our memories, others remain quiet about their sacrifices during the war. And as time passes, the number of World War II veterans also dwindles, along with their stories of hardship and hope.

Six years ago, the Advocate interviewed three Preston Hollow veterans who served abroad in Europe, on an United States base and on a Navy ship across the seas.

The story, which you can read here, describes a world vastly different than our own. It also reminds us to thank the veterans that we encounter year-round, not just on Veterans Day.
