Yet another neighbor has been honored for his community service endeavors.

Dr. Stephen Mansfield has received the Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, an accolade that recognizes Dallasites who strive to improve education and quality of life in the community.

Mansfield is the CEO and president of Methodist Health Systems, which has tripled in size since he took the helm of the company in 2006. The Tennessee native’s resume includes a host of volunteer positions for organizations such as March of Dimes and the Dallas Citizens Council.

“You don’t deem yourself worthy of something like that,” he says of the award. “The way I look at it is: I may be the person that receives the award, but I receive that on behalf of all of us at Methodist. My opportunity to be acknowledged doesn’t happen unless everyone is doing their job well.”

Mansfield first ventured into the medical field as a respiratory therapist, a role he thought would carry him through his career. But a mentor encouraged him to consider a leadership position, so he pursued a Master of Business Administration and began his career as a hospital CEO.

“What I do is business, but it’s never out of my mind that the business decisions we’re making impact the care of the patients,” he says. “It permeates what you think and how you do what you do.”

Virgina Dykes Chandler established the award in 2002, and proceeds from an annual luncheon go toward  scholarships for Texas Woman’s University students.
