Rabbi David Stern (right) and Rev. George Mason

A reverend and a rabbi walk into a baptist church together.

It sounds like the beginning of a joke or the plot of a sitcom. But there is no punchline at the end of this story.

Rabbi David Stern, of Temple Emanu-El, and the Rev. George Mason, of Wilshire Baptist Church, are good friends. They often discuss their faiths and speak at each other’s congregations.

“And if you think one of them believes the other is going to hell, the joke’s on you,” editor Keri Mitchell wrote in 2010. The only thing that the East Coast natives argue about is the Yankees and the Mets.

“We get along because we get along,” Stern said. “I think that there is so much more conversation among diverse clergy than congregants expect.”
