Sandy and Kevin McCormack spent days doling out hot dogs and snacks to evacuees at Walnut Hill Recreation Center, which houses roughly 300 people who escaped South Texas’ seemingly endless flooding.
The couple live near the evacuee shelter and started grilling for its residents on Monday, Aug. 28, before the Red Cross even finished setting up.
“We just thought it’d be a nice thing to do,” Sandy says.
The McCormacks aren’t the only community members helping displaced families.
Flagship Restaurant Group is collecting nonperishable food at Preston Hollow Village’s Blue Sushi Sake Grill and Blatt Beer & Table until Sunday, Sept. 10. Items will be delivered to The Salvation Army’s Disaster Relief Center in Arlington. Get more information here.
NorthPark Center is donating coins tossed into Dillard’s Fountain to relief efforts until Dec. 1. Several shops, such as Coach, Fossil and Lilly Pulitzer, also gave money to the Red Cross and other organizations.
Baby wipes are in high demand, but plenty of water has been donated to Walnut Hill, according to the Red Cross. Evacuees told the Advocate that children’s shoes and quarters to do laundry still are needed. If you’d like to volunteer at the shelter, visit voly.org to sign up for a shift.
Besides bringing needed items to 15660 N. Dallas Parkway, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church is collecting necessities. Clothing and food can be dropped off at North Dallas Shared Ministries, 2875 Merrell Road.
Many Harvey victims are starting school, and Dallas ISD is making preparations to receive them. According to Dallas ISD trustee Miguel Solis, school supplies can be donated to his office at 2017 Young St., suite 101 during weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Preston Hollow Presbyterian teamed up with Temple Emanu-El, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal, Northpark Presbyterian and a few other local organizations for a meal-packing event Saturday, Sept. 2. Five hundred volunteers participated.
Walnut Hill United Methodist Church served evacuees breakfast from 7-9 a.m. and dinner from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, and Sunday, Sept. 3. Project Unity, Preston Hollow Presbyterian and Northridge Presbyterian collected new, unopened cleaning supplies.
