More than a decade has passed since Melshire Estates residents were excited about the possibility of a library at Preston Road and Forest Lane.

Now neighbors are upset that the vacant property between Quincy Lane and Nuestra Drive is still no man’s land. The City has thwarted many plans, including that of  councilwoman Jennifer Staubach Gates, to transform the area into a farmer’s market or dog park.

Dallas Morning News columnist Robert Wilonsky delved into the nuances behind the abandoned land.

“I found out this week that officials are compiling a list of vacant properties Dallas might one day offload as surplus — like those 3.7 acres on Stemmons Freeway for which the city paid $5 million for a Trinity River toll road connector, never forget,”  he wrote. “But the city manager’s office, which likes to talk transparency, won’t call me back to talk about all the wasted land paid for with wasted tax and bond dollars. Neither will the real estate office in Sustainable Development and Construction.”
