 “Rooty-patooties,” as Oscar-winning SMU grad Kathy Bates said in the film “Misery.” Bates loved being at SMU. Recently, she has battled ovarian and breast cancer, SMU just announced its 2018-2019 Tate Lecture season. Bates is the star among stars. In addition to Bates, there will be three Pulitzer Prize-winners and two former White House chiefs of staff.

- Tuesday, May 7, 2019, The Anita and Truman Arnold Lecture – Kathy Bates ’69, actor, Academy Award winner (Misery), Screen Actors Guild Award winner (Primary Colors), Emmy Award winner (Two and a Half Men, American Horror Story) and Tony Award nominee (’night Mother), alumna of SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts.
- Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, The Linda and Mitch Hart Lecture – Senior statesmen and former White House Chiefs of Staff James A. Baker, III and Leon Panetta, joined by returning moderator David Gergen, former presidential advisor, CNN senior political commentator, and director of the Harvard University Center for Public Leadership.
- Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, The Tolleson Family Lecture – Jon Meacham, presidential historian, author of the best-selling George H.W. Bush biography Destiny and Power and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House.
- Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, The Gaedeke Group Lecture – Thomas Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times and author of six best-selling books, including Thank You For Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving In the Age of Accelerations.
- Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, The Baird Lecture – Siddhartha Mukherjee, cancer physician, researcher and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, named one of the top 100 books of the past 100 years by TIME Magazine.
- Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, The Jones Day Lecture – Bill Browder, founder of Hermitage Capital Management and author of Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder and One Man’s Fight for Justice – a best-selling true account of corporate corruption and the incarceration and murder of his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
- Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, The Oncor Lecture – Lisa Randall, theoretical physicist and researcher, best-selling author of Warped Passages, Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs and Knocking on Heaven’s Door, named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
- Tuesday, April 2, 2019, The Ebby Halliday Companies Lecture – Amy Cuddy, social psychologist, noted TED lecturer and best-selling author of Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges, named one of 50 Women Who Are Changing the World by Business Insider.
