TJ’s Seafood Market and Grill announced Tuesday it will not prepare gefilte fish this Passover.

The restaurant, which has a Preston Royal location at 6025 Royal Lane, said it will, however, grind raw fish for those who want to make the meal at home. Staff will also provide those customers with instructions on how to make the dish.

Owner Jon Alexis wrote in an email that “unfortunately, we have hit an operational ‘wall’ … we can’t prepare thousands of pieces of gefilte without shutting down our entire kitchen operation.”

Alexis added that the decision was not one the restaurant made lightly.

TJ’s started serving the Jewish appetizer made from a poached mixture of ground, deboned fish 20 years ago when TJ’s was just a fish market.

Alexis said back then, production of the dish took up the entire kitchen but wasn’t a problem because there was no restaurant to cook orders for.

“We should have (made the decision) years ago but have delayed the inevitable,” Alexis wrote.

Passover begins April 19 and ends April 27.
