Dallas representative and Hillcrest High School alum Colin Allred led his party to victory in the congressional baseball game. His victory came on the heels of an injury that left the team questioning whether the congressman could perform. But like a true Texan, resilient and determined, Allred rallied and chose to play the game. The congressman reportedly told his coach, “We only have one game. If I get injured, I don’t have any other games to miss”. After testing out his calf , Allred chose to forgo his position at defense. Allred was apparently disappointed with this change, as playing center field would have meant reliving his high school years. At Hillcrest High School, Allread played center field, a position that earned him all-district honors at Hillcrest High School. However, for the congressman, it was an honor just to play in a major league stadium.
Allred still showed his school spirit, sporting his Hillcrest baseball uniform. Allred seemed in a rather chipper mood on game day. “It’s great to be here,” Allred said before the game started. “I just want to see how far I can hit it.”
The former NFL star’s hit the first inning went over the left fielder’s head.
While his fellow Democrats were thrilled to have the athlete on the field, some members of the opposing team were not worried.
GOP Rep. Roger Williams, the Republicans’ manager, didn’t seem to view Allred, injured or not, as a threat. “Colin’s a football player,” he said. “This is a baseball game”. The Dallas representative proved them wrong and made us proud, hitting two doubles, one in the first inning and one in the fifth helping lead the Democrats to a 14-7 win.
The game is really a victory for all, as the proceeds from the game go to the Washington Literacy Center, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and a Capitol Police memorial fund.
