Jesuit alum Josh Bell and Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman is having a bit of a batting slump, according to Forbes’ John Perrotto. He says Bell started his third major league season having a breakout year, but he has not had a home run since July 5. Apparently, Bell has tried everything to get back on track — more batting practice, less batting practice and more video study. A May Advocate interview with Bell revealed that he is a thoughtful, spiritual, hardworking man who calls his father after every game. Here’s what Bell said about his dad’s advice during those talks. “He is spiritual and uplifting, so whatever’s on my heart, he steers me in the right direction and keeps me believing in myself.” When Bell and team came to play the Rangers in April, the Jesuit community attended en masse to show their support.
