When Tom Landis opened Howdy Homemade, he came up with the idea to hire those with Down syndrome and autism, and now he’s in the national spotlight.

Landis had opened more than a dozen restaurants and had experience working in the special-needs community. He had also heard from many in the community that they were having difficulties getting hired, according to ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.

When former Secretary of State John Kerry was here recently and searched online for the best ice cream in Dallas, Yelp sent him to Howdy.

Dallasite Jordan Spieth, one of the hottest players on the PGA and a Jesuit grad, is a Howdy fan. His younger sister, Ellie, was born with a neurological disorder.

“I was joking with someone the other day,” he told The Dallas Morning News. “There’s the guy who sees the glass half empty and the one who sees it as half full. I’m the one who sees the glass as broken and needs fixing.”
