Students from Jesuit, Ursuline and Hockaday do it, why can’t you? They volunteer with Reading Partners, a literacy nonprofit that aspires to help students read at grade level by fourth grade. You, too, can volunteer at a new program at Tom C. Gooch Elementary.

Studies show that 75% of students who struggle with reading in the third grade will never catch up with their classmates, according to the nonprofit. Those same students are four times as likely to drop out of high school.

“Their worlds literally expand. They make a connection with an adult and they see somebody who cares about them,” Malik Stewart, program director of Reading Partners North Texas, told NBC 5. “It’s a little bit of magic.”
