DART’S Mockingbird Station near SMU has been renamed. Now can we make it safe?

Mockingbird Station has been renamed SMU/Mockingbird after the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Board approved a naming-rights agreement with Southern Methodist University to make it easier for visitors to find and access the campus.

The board authorized the 10-year agreement last November, and SMU was added to the station name this summer.

The name change was also intended to cement the station’s role as a gateway to the university for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Each weekday, about 2,800 riders travel through SMU/Mockingbird, and DART’s shuttle service, the Mustang Express, provides service to the campus for 500 riders.

“We have so many activities on our campus, we want to share with our neighbors,” SMU President R. Gerald Turner said. “Taking DART to SMU/Mockingbird Station is an easy way to get to a wide variety of SMU events — from Division I sporting events to lectures and artistic performances, as well as the George W. Bush Presidential Center.”

SMU/Mockingbird Station is located along Mockingbird Lane and North Central Expressway. It is served by DART’s red, orange and blue lines, as well as several bus routes, including the SMU Express.
