Dallas ISD community facing the spread of COVID-19

During the current health crisis that we are all facing due to the spread of COVID-19, the strength, resilience, and adaptability of the Dallas ISD community has been exceptional. For many students and teachers in District 1, it is the second time they’ve had to transition out of their classrooms in just six months. However, despite having to pick up again and adapt to new circumstances when they were just settling into their new campuses, the level of energy and commitment they have shown is simply inspiring.

At-home learning

Within a very short time, Dallas ISD administrators and teachers have come up with ways to engage students in learning, aided by an abundance of tools available online. Throughout the past few days I have seen hundreds of students working from home during the school closure: from Pre-K students at Everette Lee DeGolyer Elementary School sending drawings of community helpers and things beginning with the letter U, to a Thomas Jefferson High School teacher transforming her apartment into her very own work studio.

However, aware that many Dallas ISD students don’t have reliable internet access, the Board of Trustees authorized the purchase 10,000 additional hotspots for middle and high school students in an effort to ensure all students have the tools to continue their education. Students in need of a hotspot should contact their campus principals to request a hotspot.

Grab-N-Go Meals by the numbers

Many of our students rely on their school cafeterias for at least two of their daily mails. For this reason, Dallas ISD is providing students with grab-and-go meals to be distributed at 47 selected campuses. During the first two weeks of bulk grab-and-go meal service, Dallas ISD provided over a million meals to students. Beginning on Thursday, April 9, grab-and-go meals will only be distributed on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Students will be provided with about a week’s worth of meals before their next pick-up the following Thursday.

Laying the foundations of a stronger future

On April 1, pre-K enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year opened. For the first time, families will process their registration and upload the requirements online at www.prekdallas.org. The system and steps will be available in English and Spanish.
