Philanthropist and Ursuline Academy graduate Melinda Gates went on the Today show May 8 and shared her thoughts about the coronavirus. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is working to help during the pandemic. She said there are “a few good candidates” for a vaccine and that the U.S. needs “to start looking at a paid medical leave policy” to help workers on the front lines. She also criticized the Trump administration for its response to the crisis: “We haven’t had leadership at the national level … it’s chaos.”

Melinda Gates told Yahoo Finance on May 7 that caregiving is overlooked. She urged policymakers and business leaders to make caregiving more accessible for those who need it and more viable for the people — mostly women — who provide it.

“We have had a broken caregiving system in the United States for over 50 years now, and we’re the only industrialized nation that doesn’t think about caregiving and value it,” she said. “So what’s happening is during this COVID-19 time it’s exposing that broken caregiving system. We can’t get people back to work and rebuild the economy unless we really focus on this caregiving piece and do the right things.”
