Aquatic centers, summer camps, park-site programming and outdoor adventure programs will remain closed this summer because of increasing coronavirus cases, the Park and Recreation Department director said.

Park and Recreation Department Director John Jenkins announced the cancellations Wednesday in a letter.

Instead, the department will expand its Rec@Home virtual summer camp to serve additional youth. The free five-week camp for youth ages 7-12 will begin Monday and include live virtual activities on topics such as art, sports, cooking, science, trivia and more.

The cancellation comes after the department attempted to move forward with its summer programs by postponing until July 20.

Recreation centers are scheduled to reopen at limited capacity Aug. 17 with modified hours of operation at 45 hours per week. Staff-led programs and activities will not resume until Oct. 1.

Park staff said they hope to provide after-school programs on campuses that are not within walking distance of recreation centers, but they are awaiting more information from Dallas ISD. Those programs would not begin before Oct. 1.
