When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, the idea of sheltering in place sounded fairly simple. Many were chagrined at the idea of not being able to go to bars or restaurants, however, for some people, this was the last thing on their mind. Victims of domestic violence and abuse within the home are scared at the idea of not being able to leave the home to go to work, school or make temporary escapes with friends. During this difficult time, Mimi’s Pizzeria has extended a hand.

This past April, Mimi’s Pizza began offering a community pie, a heart-shaped pizza, to support the Dallas community and victims of family violence during these trying times. 10% of the proceeds from the community pie have been donated to The Family Place, an anti-violence shelter based in Dallas. From April to July, Mimi’s collected $2,000 for The Family Place. They have since presented a check to the organization.

“While this period of shelter-in-place has been difficult, I can’t imagine sheltering in a home where I did not feel safe,” said Mimi Ahmedi, owner of Mimi’s Pizzeria, in a press release. “The Family Place does a tremendous job providing life-saving support to those in need, and this is a small way in which we could help them continue their life-saving work.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, calls to domestic violence hotlines have seen a significant increase. Thankfully, restaurants like Mimi’s have shown compassion and charity to victims.

“During this critical time, we have been so encouraged by how the community has come together to support one another,” said Paige Flink, CEO of The Family Place. “We thank Mimi’s Pizzeria for being there for The Family Place.”

Mimi’s Pizzeria is located at 6807 W. Northwest Highway in Dallas.
