Why are so many people investing in memes to gain traction and followers for their companies or groups, like Mark Cuban and his @NBAMemes Instagram account? Memes seem to be a successful way to keep up with trends of young and old social media users, but especially teenagers.

Alamo Records told Complex that a successful meme can increase streaming numbers from 122% and 600%.

A ‘meme,’ according to Merriam-Webster, is “an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially through social media.” When memes are successful on social media, meme accounts are referred to as ‘meme factories.’ These factories have millions of followers.

Warner Music Group just paid $85,000,000 for one of the internet’s most prominent meme factories, the Hustle reported. The purchase included IMGN Media and a popular Instagram account with over 15,000,000 followers, @Daquan.
