If you can decorate a mean mantel, there could be a State Fair of Texas ribbon in it this year.

The State Fair of Texas is canceled, but fair food is still on, and a virtual creative arts competition offers a chance to show our stay-at-home skills.

Texans can compete in seven categories:

masks, which can be handmade or store-bought and decorated,

sidewalk chalk art created after March 2020,

nail art, preferably Big Tex, State Fair of Texas or Texas themed,

themed/decorated mantel or shelf, a vignette inspired by Texas,

cake decorating,

cookie decorating

and mini butter sculptures that use no more than 1 pound of butter.

Entries cost $2 and may be submitted online from Sept. 21-Oct. 4. They will be judged in three classes: adults, juniors ages 13-17, and children 12 and younger.
