Dylan Piper and Robert Hamman, along with ten other volunteers, refurbished the courts over the course of a few days, first cleaning and painting the courts’ surface (which hadn’t been retouched in over 20 years), then striping and completing the painting to finish.
“What drew me towards the idea was the fact that no one truly played at the courts,” Piper told Preston Hollow People, “and, as a Scout, I felt the need to connect more people in that community with a court that family and friends could actually play on.”
Piper and Hamman chose to spruce up the Netherland courts as both a way to give back to the community and as part of their Eagle project, a requirement to earn Scouting’s prestigious Eagle Scout rank. The two also had help from Dallas City Parks concerning initial planning and preparation for the project.
While the group started their renovations in winter of last year, initial progress was halted due to COVID-19. With added precautions and social distancing, however, the project resumed earlier this summer and was completed in May.
