This past weekend, volunteers at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church created a “Say Their Names” memorial display in honor of Black victims of police brutality.
“This art installation joins a national grassroots movement to facilitate conversation​s and honor Black lives lost to systemic racism and racial injustice,” the church wrote in a Facebook post. “By installing this temporary memorial at the church, we are encouraging open dialogue around issues of racial equity and justice while spreading a message of love, equality, and compassion throughout the community and beyond.”
The memorial is in conjunction with ministry partners, Rev. Richie Butler, pastor at St. Luke Community UMC and Project Unity Dallas, a faith-based organization which builds programs to help heal race relationships between law enforcement and Dallas citizens.
“We’re the most racially segregated city in America, and so for us to be proximate to one another, we have to be intentional about the relationships we seek out,” Rev. Matthew Ruffner said. “What’s so powerful about this experience is it provides us, a neighborhood in North Dallas, an opportunity to get proximate in our own zip code.”
The installation will be up on the corner of Walnut Hill and Preston Road for four weeks.
