In 2015, Jesuit grad Jordan Spieth left Augusta National Golf Club a champion. Spieth, who was only 21 at the time, tied the record set by Tiger Woods for lowest score. He finished at 270, or 18-under-par. This was four strokes ahead of runners-up Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.
However, Spieth and Woods’ record has now been broken, meaning that Preston Hollow can no longer claim to be home to the world’s best Masters player.
Golfer Dustin Johnson broke the record this past Sunday, scoring a 268, or 20-under-par. He finished five ahead of runners-up Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith.
Spieth, who also golfed this past weekend, tied for 46th place at one-above-par. Once ranked first in the world, Spieth, who is now 27, is ranked 80th.
At the Masters this past weekend, Spieth struggled to make the initial cut to play on Saturday. On Thursday, he came in at two-over-par 74. He then had a comeback on Friday, making his way to even par. Even par was the cut line this year.
Spieth then shot one-above-par on Saturday and even par on Sunday. This put him at one-above-par overall.
But even though his ranking has dropped and he has recently struggled in major tournaments, Spieth is still looking forward to the future.
“If anything, (the struggle) has provided me with advantages going forward. I’m just trying to look at it as a clean slate. It’s a patience game that is hard for me to deal with because I’m not a patient person. But I’m getting better,” Spieth said in a recent interview with Golfweek.
