Hospitals across the country saw a surge in critically ill COVID-19 patients last week, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services.

There was only one intensive care unit beds available within a 25-mile radius of our neighborhood, according to this interactive graphic from the New York Times, which compiled the data from that agency.

Think it’s better in the suburbs? No. There were zero ICU beds available in McKinney last week, according to the data. It’s also not better in the country. The data show there were zero ICU beds available in Waxahachie last week.
