Super Bowl Sunday is getting ‘soupier’ in Preston Hollow this year.
In response to rising food insecurity in Texas amid the pandemic, the youth of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church are hosting a “Souper” Bowl Sunday food drive on Sunday, February 7 from 8 a.m. to noon. On that day, people are invited to drive by the youth house at 9800 Preston Rd. and drop off non-perishable goods to be distributed to families and people in need, which youth volunteers will collect and sort.
As a result of school closure and layoffs due to the coronavirus, weekly Census data and reporting from the Texas Hunger Initiative show that food insecurity in Dallas has doubled during the pandemic. In Census data collected December 9-21, the leading reason for food insecurity in households was that families couldn’t afford to buy more food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the number of people and households applying for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits since the pandemic increased by almost 15% in both categories just from March 2020 to April 2020.
The foods that are most needed include:
- Canned meat or fish (such as tuna, chicken, stew, chili, salmon and corned beef)
- Soup
- Canned fruit in fruit juice
- Canned vegetables
- Pasta
- Peanut butter
- Cereal
- Non-perishable milk products (powdered milk, boxed pudding, etc)
- Rice
- Baby food
