Dr. John Revere Richmond, commonly called “Doc,” died Jan. 5, 2021, after a six-week fight with COVID-19; he was 72.
Richmond, the father of W. T. White High School graduates, was born in 1949 in Borger, Texas, according to his obituary in the Dallas Morning News.
He moved often during his early years but eventually ended up at SMU, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in 1972. He then attended medical school in Illinois and moved back to Texas to begin his residency in Corpus Christi in 1976.
On the first day of his residency at Memorial Medical Center, Richmond met his wife, Carol Ann Dial. They married in 1977.
The Richmonds were foster parents in Corpus Christi and Dallas, where they moved in 1979.
Richmond began private practice at St. Paul Hospital and later started working at UTSW Medical School, where he helped form the Family Practice Residency Program.
He was named Physician of the Year by the Texas Academy of Family Practice, and served as the Doctor of the Day at the capitol many times.
Richmond, an Eagle Scout, served as the scoutmaster of Troop 835 in North Dallas for almost 10 years. All three of his sons are Eagle Scouts.
Richmond is survived by his six children and 13 grandchildren. The family has decided to postpone a memorial service until later in the year. Donations in his name can be made to the North Dallas Shared Ministries or Council 10 Boy Scouts.
