At today’s Dallas ISD Board of Trustees briefing, the Environmental & Sustainability Committee provided recommendations and suggestions as to how the district can be more environmentally responsible.

The committee, which was formed in February 2020 with the adoption of the Environment & Climate resolution, presented goals, ideas and policies to implement across a range of departments: food and child nutrition services, transportation, construction services, grounds, maintenance and custodial, and energy.

Presenters also gave suggestions related to the district as a whole, such as joining Green Schools Alliance or another organization and adding units to the school curriculum to teach students about sustainability.

David Bates,  DISD’s assistant superintendent of Maintenance and Facility Services/Construction Services Support, says there are some economic benefits to adopting environmentally friendly practices. For example, DISD has saved $1.5 million each year by switching to 100% renewable energy.

Next, the district will evaluate the feasibility of the group’s suggestions.
