Dallas ISD is helping with the push to vaccinate young people. Starting May 17, students from 25 high schools will be bused to vaccination sites during school hours.
The district will be transporting students ages 16-18 to the Fair Park and Ellis Davis Field House sites to receive their vaccines. Students must have a signed permission slip, and a nurse will ride along on each bus.
“Many of our parents are working full time and can’t get out of work to take their kids for something like this,” Jennifer Finley, DISD’s director of health services, tells the Dallas Morning News. “Offering that access to care for our students and families is a very important part of what we do as a district.”
On May 12, the CDC approved the Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 12-15, but DISD will probably not expand the program to younger students by June 18, the last day of the school year. By beginning the busing next week, the district will be able to bring students back for a second dose before summer vacation.
Hillcrest, W.T. White and Thomas Jefferson students will be bused to the Ellis Davis vaccination site.
