Luke Wilson returned to North Texas to shoot a new film, “12 Mighty Orphans,” which opens in Texas on June 11.

Wilson, who played football for Jerry Reese and ran track at St. Mark’s School of Texas, has the lead role in the film, which is based on the book “Twelve Mighty Orphans,” written by former Dallas sportswriter Jim Dent. Wilson’s character, Rusty Russell, is a war veteran who lives with post-traumatic stress disorder and leaves a lucrative job to coach and teach at a rundown orphanage.

“I loved the idea of playing somebody like that, a stand-up individual,” Wilson told the Dallas Morning News. “He was just so decent. He wasn’t chasing money and prestige. A very selfless person.”

Wilson joins Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall in the film, which was shot in Fort Worth. Wilson’s mother, photographer Laura Wilson, lives in Preston Hollow.
