Former City Plan Commission member Jaynie Schultz beat attorney Barry Wernick in Saturday’s runoff election for the District 11 seat on the Dallas City Council.

Schultz beat Wernick with about 54 percent of the vote.

“I’m so honored and excited to be elected District 11 councilwoman,” Schultz said. “After a long and challenging race, honesty, integrity and experience prevailed. I want to thank all of my incredible volunteers, advocates, neighbors and voters who made this campaign possible. I cannot wait to represent this district around the horseshoe.”

Schultz and Wernick were competing for the seat held by outgoing Councilman Lee Kleinman. The two advanced to the runoff when neither candidate received 50 percent of the vote in the May 1 election. At the time, Schultz received 2,889 votes, or 36.22 percent, and Wernick received 3,038 votes, or 38.08 percent.

Schultz will be sworn in June 14 at a virtual inauguration ceremony.
