A Hillcrest High School graduate who worked at the pawnshop where John Hinckley bought the gun he used in an assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan died in May.

David Harold Goldstein died May 12. He was 78 years old, according to his obituary.

After graduating from Hillcrest, Goldstein attended the University of Texas and then returned to Dallas to help run the family pawnshop owned by his father, Rocky. Rocky’s Pawn Shop, located at 2018 Elm St. in Deep Ellum, is known for legally selling the .22-caliber Rohm RG-14 Hinckley used in the assassination attempt on Reagan.

Goldstein later became full owner, and he and his father moved to East Dallas not long after Hinckley purchased the gun. He turned the shop into Rocky’s Police Equipment, and his father operated a small pawnshop inside the store, located on Garland and Peavy roads.

Goldstein is also remembered for starting the men’s dinner group, The Weiss Guys, with his two best friends. The group of three grew to more than 200 over 35 years. He also loved to travel and sing. Before his death, he sang in the Shearith Israel Choir.

Goldstein leaves behind his wife Laura Levy; children Evelyn and Jordan (Meghan) Goldstein; stepchildren Julia Levy (Hugh Watkins), Debra Levy (James Greenburg), Josh and Carly Kimmel; and granddaughter Makenna Goldstein.
