A rising junior at The Hockaday School was named a semi-finalist in a recent playwriting competition.

Elle Chavis was one of four semi-finalists in Fort Worth’s Circle Theatre’s High School Playwriting Project. Her play, “The Light,” is about two sisters and the spirit of their mother.

Chavis was the only student from a Dallas high school recognized in the competition. There were six finalists, with three of them co-authoring a single work.

The Circle Theatre hosts this competition every year to benefit local student playwrights. Teachers from any school in Dallas-Fort Worth were able to submit 10-minute scripts written by their students for evaluation.

At Hockaday, Chavis is Form Council secretary, an H-Club student ambassador, outreach director of New/Gen Hockaday and outreach director of History Retold. She is involved with the drama department and acts at Young Actor’s House. Chavis also is the senior teen secretary and a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
