J.J. Barea is in talks to reunite with former teammate Jason Kidd on the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff.

On Friday, the team reached a verbal agreement with Kidd to fill the head coaching job vacated by Rick Carlisle.

“J.J. Barea has had a preliminary conversation with former teammate Jason Kidd about joining his coaching staff in Dallas, sources told ESPN,” NBA insider MacMahon said on Twitter. “Barea has strong relationships throughout the organization, including Luka Doncic, and the Mavs missed his presence last season.”

The Mavs waived Barea in December 2020, and he signed to play with Estudiantes in Spain.

Kidd and, potentially, Barea aren’t the only members of the 2011 championship team back at the organization. Preston Hollow neighbor Dirk Nowitzki rejoined last week as a special adviser.
