A traditional Indian frozen dessert that was once reserved for ancient royalty debuted at Whole Foods this month.

Boxes of Kaurina’s kulfi are hitting the shelves at the organic grocer. Kulfi is made with simple ingredients, including cooked milk, cane sugar and natural flavors. It’s low in fat and free of eggs and gluten, making it a healthier alternative to ice cream.

Preston Hollow neighbor Jas Singh started the brand from her kitchen using a recipe passed down from her grandmother. Eleven years later, it’s sold at Costco, Wegmans and independent grocery stores across the United States.

Whole Foods shoppers will find three flavors: pistachio almond, malai and mango. The rich and creamy dessert bars come in packs of four and cost $6.

“Our kulfi is made with pure, simple ingredients and provides an all-natural option for dessert and snacking,” said Aman Singh, vice president and chief operating officer of Kaurina’s. “We felt our product and mission aligned very well with Whole Foods.”

Find it in our neighborhood at the Whole Foods at 11700 Preston Road.
