Perhaps the most recognizable pass in Dallas Cowboys history has been converted into a non-fungible token, or NFT.
The Hail Mary happened about 50 years ago, when Preston Hollow neighbor Roger Staubach threw the ball to Drew Pearson, winning the 1975 game against Minnesota in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Former Cowboys receiver Doug Donley brought the idea to Staubach and Pearson, the Dallas Morning News reported. Donley’s company Ellipsis Digital partnered with the two players on the offering.
The NFT will be sold through Heritage Auctions during the 2021 Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction, which is set for Aug. 21-22. It could sell between $80,000 and $100,000, the auction’s production manager estimates, but the starting bid is $20,000.
Whoever wins the bid will get the NFT artwork, a 55-inch screen to display it and a shot at re-enacting the pass on the field with the original players.
“I know Drew will still catch it,” Staubach told the Morning News. “I just hope I still have the arm to get it there.”
This isn’t the first time the play has been memorialized. In 2020, Staubach created a chalk painting of the play, and he and Pearson signed it. It was sold at the “In This Together” charity auction, which benefitted the North Texas Food Bank.
